About this image


NGC7711 is about 55 Mpc away and is distorted due to possible recent mergers with smaller galaxies called dwarfs. You can just make out a faint dust lane around the core and the extended loops are thought to be star streams from at least two orbits of a dwarf galaxy.

This image has been inverted and contrast enhanced to help reveal the faint tidal streams.
